How to Determine That You Have Gold or Silver

Most gold jewelry is marked as 10 karat, 14 karat, or 18 karat gold. If it is marked "14kp" or "10kp," it is gold. If it is marked with "HGE," "GE," "GP," or "RGP," it is not gold. Those letters designate costume jewelry, which we do not deal in.

You can also use a magnet to test your jewelry. Gold and silver are not magnetic, so if the magnet works on your jewelry it is not real gold or silver.

We have an acid test to determine if a piece is truly silver. If the acid turns red, it's silver. If the acid turns yellow, it's not silver. We normally perform this test after the magnet test. Have sterling flatware? It has to be marked "Sterling" or it's probably silver plate and carries little or no value.
